The State of Streaming Protocols - 2018 summary

Softvelum team continues analyzing the state of streaming protocols. It's based on stats from WMSPanel reporting service which handles data from Wowza Streaming Engine and Nimble Streamer servers.

In 2018, WMSPanel collected data about 48 billion views.
We also added a new metric - total view time for our server products. It's nearly 6.7 billion hours.
On average, there were 3600 to 3900 servers under WMSPanel observation at any moment of time.

Let's take a look at the chart and numbers of this quarter:

To compare, take a look at the chart and numbers of 2017:

The State of Streaming Protocols - 2017

You can also compare that to 2016 protocols landscape.

What can we see from these charts?
  • HLS gets even bigger share of 67%. It remains a de-facto standard for end-user media consumption. This year we've implemented fMP4 HLS support for VOD in addition to live fMP4 HLS streaming which will give capability to decrease traffic numbers with same level of viewership.
  • RTMP is still in active use for live streaming scenarios with real-time delivery. In 2020 Adobe will discontinue Flash support and major browsers will start getting rid of it in late 2019. As a result, RTMP playback will start going down.
  • SLDP is a new protocol created by Softvelum as a replacement of RTMP for real-time streaming. It's based on WebSockets and it can deliver content to MSE-enabled browsers on most platforms. Native mobile apps and SDKs can also be used for adding SLDP playback on Android and iOS. After its introduction in 2017, SLDP gained momentum from 6M views last year to nearly 200M in 2018.
Early next year we'll introduce a transition plan for those who would like to shift from RTMP to SLDP.
  • Icecast keeps around 4% share through the years as our customers use it for audio streaming. Nimble Streamer has full support for this technology and our SLDP Player currently supports Icecast mobile playback.
  • Progressive download is still strong with VOD scenarios as an addition to HLS.
  • Other protocols are in their niches, getting low percentage.

We'll keep analyzing protocols to see the dynamics. Check our updates at Facebook and Twitter.
